UNITY Spring Concert and Workshop

UNITY, Korean Traditional Drum and Dance Troupe at Yale, is presenting the first Spring concert in years. The concert will feature samul, a unique percussion music of Korea, drum dancing, and an ensemble of piano and traditional string instrument haegum. The performance will be followed by an interactive workshop in which the audience can learn the rhythms and make music together (the true Korean music spirit!).

5/18 Gwangju Democracy Movement

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the Democracy Movement in Gwangju. In 1980, in the midst of the switch from one military dictatorship to another, democracy movements started throughout South Korea. Mass demonstrations for reform evolved into a people's takeover of the government in Gwangju on May 18th. The government responded with force and a violent confrontation between the people of Gwangju and the military ensued for ten days. Estimates for the casualties rates vary wildly from the hundreds to the thousands as information about the incident was suppressed.

Gwangju however was not forgotten forever. In 1997, 17 former government officials including two ex-presidents were convicted for their roles in the response to the uprising; the two presidents were later pardoned. This incident is also one source of anti-Americanism in South Korea as there seems to be some controversy about whether American officials approve the use of force against the Korean public. The Gwangju Movement was even featured in one of the all time classic Korean dramas Sandglass which depicted reenacted scenes from the incident at a time when many did not know what had happened. 8:30 - Head to Kinkos to print out four copies of our sixty-page bid packet.
9:00 - This Kinkos doesn't exist anymore?? Let's go find another one.
9:30 - WHY ISN'T THE FILE ON THE FLASH DRIVE? AND IT'S RAINING? Panic mode sets in.
10:30 - Bid packet downloaded and printed. Frantic drive to Malibu.
11:30 - Arrive at Pepperdine. Catch the last half of seminar 2.
12:00 - Lunch. Comfort food. Review for bid presentation.
13:00 - Seminar 3.
14:00 - Bid presentation with Rutgers. Simultaneously fun and exhausting.
16:00 - Closing ceremony. Trouble staying awake. Keynote speaker is a baller though.
17:45 - Drive to nearest In N Out. Yum.
19:00 - Arrive at the legendary Shrine Auditorium for Kollaboration X. Bump into friends from middle school(!)
23:00 - The night begins.

Today was a crazy ("cray cray") blur of driving, sightseeing, and conferencing. After picking up four people from LAX at 12:30 pm (and leaving two others stranded... temporarily), we headed over to K-town for some last minute bid packet adjustments and the prospect of food. We bumped into some technical difficulties but managed to make it to Pepperdine in time for... wait for it... social speed dating! Yeah, not awkward at all.

Then, dinnertime! We hit up a little Mexican restaurant near Pepperdine, where I ordered the Pepperdine burrito (probably the SoCal analog of naming sushi rolls after Yale and New Haven). The owner came out to greet us, give us free cookies, and congratulate us for being Yalies. Good times.

The day wrapped up with a keynote address by the eminent K. W. Lee, which was intense and emotional and sort of awesome, and an evening of coffeehouse entertainment, including an act by Danny Cho (hilarious). I drove Eliot and Allen back to my house afterwards, but I don't know where everyone else went. Interesting updates tomorrow, I expect.

What up KASY? It's your friendly neighborhood president here, reporting live from my hometown of Los Angeles, CA. In case you've been living under a rock (or in Bass) for the past few weeks, spring break has finally begun! And of course, with spring break comes the Korean American Students Conference, being held this year at Pepperdine University in Malibu. We have a huge Yale contingent this year--18 people--and I thought it'd be fun to keep a record of our adventures this weekend on this blog. Check back often for updates, especially on Saturday afternoon to hear how our bid for KASCON XXV goes.

Oh, and one last thing:

SoCal beaches are the best, muaha.

March 1st Commemoration

On March 1st 1919, the Korean Independence movement was born. Korean nationalists presented a formal declaration of independence to the Japanese colonial government and protests broke out all across the country. To commemorate the heroic acts and sacrifices of the over 7000 individuals who gave their lives and 15000 more who were injured that day, we're urging all KASY members and friends to dress in black on Monday. We will be distributing commemorative pins at the culture show and over the weekend that can be worn to show your support.

ERI Open house

That afternoon we will be having an Open House at the East Rock Institute, this coming Monday at 5:30PM. ERI is a nonprofit research and educational organization dedicated to the enhancement and deepening of cultural understanding between Eastern and Western societies through innovative approaches to research and teaching. It was founded by the late Dr. Kwang Lim Koh, husband of the current chair of the organization, Dr. Hesung Koh, and father of Dr. Harold Koh, Obama's legal advisor and Dr. Howard Koh, US Assis. Secretary of Health.

ERI is looking for Yale students interested in East Asian Studies to volunteer and intern for different ongoing projects. It is an opportunity to network with many alumni and learn about Korean/Korean-American culture. Come out to meet people, learn about the opportunities at ERI, and hear a little about the history of KASY. Also, delicious Korean food will be provided. Please RSVP to sunhyoung.park@yale.edu.

Hello KASY,

I can't believe that the school year is over and that my Yale Career is already halfway done. I must be missing my job as media chair because why else would I be up on a thursday night at 2 AM writing a blog for the KASY Website... Anyways 2008-2009 has been an excellent year. My family was great and I really had a great getting to know my "children" better. Will and Tiffany you guys rock! and so does my wife haha. I will sincerely miss updating the website and having the power to do anything such as posting pictures of myself.

Haha Anyways, the end of the year was great. The senior banquet was held at Bangkok Gardens and the senior turnout was excellent. Although no one cried, except me, everyone did laugh and enjoy reminiscing about the impact that the 2009 Senior Class has had. Good job by the way to the New Board on a successful first event!

The KASY Cultural Show was awesome as well! I would like to give props to our cultural chair, Grace Kim, for doing a great job with it and to everyone else who put so much hard work into making it a success (tae kwon do people, actors, dance groups...) The after-show dinner was also so much and I'm glad that I got to meet some new people that night as well as spend time with those I do know. Expect photos from me to be uploaded sometime this year, but this is probably the last post I will write. It has been a pleasure!

Hey KASY members!

Be sure to check out the new pics I loaded from our recent events. The Korean Food night had tasty food and drew a pretty big crowd, although we ran out of food kinda fast... I've also got to give props to the freshen! Although I personally thought the skit lacked a central story line, I can't deny I laughed my butt off. Great board impressions guys!

However, my favorite event so far this year was the Master's tea with Senator Paull Shin. Senator Shin had such an inspirational story and he almost brought me to tears multiple times haha. Anyways, I hope everyone else got as much out of it as I did. I want to personally thank our political chair, Megan Lee, for organizing the event. great job!

Finally, We still have Spring Adopted Friends coming up... If you have any ideas for improvements, contact our Community chair: Laurie Kim. We also have the Cultural show left as well as who knows what!? Have a great break and get ready to come back and study hard!

So as you all know it's Korean culture to have Dukgook at the beginning of the year. Hanpurri, Yale's Korean International Student Society, along with KASY co-hosted this event and it was awesome. I have to say the Dukgook was delicious as were the mandoo, japchae, kimchi, and bap. haha.

Hey KASY members! I hope all of you had a very relaxing and enjoyable vacation and are ready to start the new semester. I finally updated the website haha sorry for the delay, but anyways make sure you check out the new pictures I uploaded.

I thought last semester's events were pretty sweet. Blackout was great ... all of blacklights looked really good and the DJ played some sweet music too. I want to thank Groove and the B-boys for their excellent dance performances as well. The study break we put on was pretty sweet too. I'm sorry about the den jang though! totally my fault that we didn't have any haha. Anyways, If you missed either of these events don't worry! Your fearless KASY Board has some great ideas for this upcoming semester. Get excited!

Oh also, Adopted Friends was the other big event for the fall. Make sure you give Laurie a pat on the back for all of her hard work! If you missed the fall one, there's also a spring Adopted Friends. We want to have more member involvement in the planning of this event so watch out for sign-ups for committees. Adopted Friends is totally worth signing up for, it's a great way to help adopted Korean children learn more about their culture (btw somehow I would like to make it more informative in the spring...but i digress). Also! you never know who you may meet at Adopted Friends... :) haha

Anyways, that's all I have for now. Remember to feel free to send me any pictures you may have taken during our KASY events or suggestions. Also, I can't believe I'm going to say this, but to Korean companies that have recently been spamming our Board with advertisements. This is unacceptable and must stop. This website exists for KASY members and for pre-frosh to learn about KASY, NOT for advertisement.

Hey guys! Well the year is well on its way and many people have already had or will have their first exams. Good luck! In KASY, many exciting things have been happening. Naples Night was held on Sept. 18th. It was an excellent turn-out and it was a great time to meet new people.

The new Freshmen Liaison were elected...Congrats to Eunbi and John!

And the new families were announced at the 2nd General meeting.
Freshmen, my advice to you is to spend time with your parents! KASY is a great way to make new friends and to get in touch with the Korean community here at Yale. My parents are among my closest friends and I'm thankful that I've had the chance to get to know them.

And in other news, I have finally begun my own adventure in learning how to update the website. Bear with me as I attempt to follow in the footsteps of the Greats that have preceded me haha.

I hope that your summers have been relaxing and enjoyable. Frosh, it was wonderful seeing your beautiful faces at the Bazaar and I really hope that ALL of you come out to our first meeting. One of the things I like most about KASY is the strong community of Korean friends that it offers, something that I lacked in high school. So I hope that all of you will have a great time with KASY too. If you're not Korean, don't be discouraged, we're all still really cool people haha. Anyways if you ever have any questions about the club feel free to approach myself or anyone in KASY. I know the website is terribly out-dated and I will work on that, just give me a little time haha. Everyone else, I can't wait to see you all again. Just a few reminders.

KASY Senior Banquet 2008

Hello! The school year is finally winding down. Most people are finishing up their finals and heading home *tear* The 2008 Senior banquet took place on Thursday, May 1 at Zaroka Restaurant. A bigger turnout would have been nice, but hey we still had a great time.

Congrats to the 2007-2008 KASY Board for all the work they did this past year! Congrats to the 2008 Seniors as well! We'll miss you guys!
